Ancient Ripac with Lovely Lapodian Islets

The Ripac archaeological site was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003 ("Službeni glasnik“ of Bosnia and Herzegovina", number 32/03), and is considered one of exceptional importance for further archaeological research.

In ancient history, the area of Ripc was inhabited by Lapydes, people who have inhabited our wider regional area, Lika, Kordun and western Bosnia, an integral part of the territory of the advanced  Illyria civilization.

The Lapydes were a well-organized, equally exposed to continental and Mediterranean influences which were reflected in their distinctive artistic expression. Today’s Lika County was their main area, and the area by the River Una was known for their interesting stilt houses that were raised on wooden poles over, or near, Una. Three certainly verified prehistoric stilt house settlements are: Ripac, Golubic and the Bukva waterfall between the villages of Lohovo and Racic. You can find out more about the history of the ancient Lapydes in the Museum of the Una-Sana Canton in Bihac.
